As I have undertaken further tests, I'm doubting whether it is a problem
of the xserver and the Gnome Configuration, or whether it is primarily a
problem of the ATI Driver.

Using another computer with a different graphic device doesn't show
these problems.

Another fact: The problem of the twinkling contours is increasing from
left to right on the screen. On the left margin there is nearly no
problem.
