[Bug 508697] Re: [gm45] mouse pointer invisible after boot (KMS only)

I've been contending with Intel video issues and Xorg for quite some
time now. I'm running Lucid Beta 2, and passing i915.modeset=0 (or
nomodeset, but that hasn't worked 100 percent of the time) in the boot
line is the only way I can get any video at all on my system with the
Intel 830m chipset (82830 CGC to be more specific).

If i915.modeset=0 goes away in version 2.10.0 of the Intel driver, does
that mean "older" Intel graphics chips will work? Or does it mean that
nomodeset will still be available?

Whatever benefits kernel mode setting has brought to users of newer
Intel video chips, it's been an absolute nightmare for those of us with
older video chips. The two machines I have like this are a Toshiba
Satellite 1100-S101 and Gateway Solo 1450 (both with 830m and both made
about 2001-02).

I've only been running Lucid Beta 2 for a couple days, and I have times
when there's no mouse pointer at the login screen, but if you "fail" at
the login, the pointer reappears.
