We always assume that it is not until we have a good reason to think
it is the same. For xorg-related bugs, it is best to file a separate
bug report and then later mark some as duplicates if they turn out to
be the same.

The mainline kernel doesn't replace the Ubuntu kernel. They install
side-by-side and you can choose on boot (hold in shift during boot if
your system is not configured to show a boot menu). By default the one
with highest version number will be used (i.e. the mainline kernel in
this case). Unless you have a very particular wireless card, the
drivers are probably part of the mainline kernel as well. At least my
thinkpad works well with the mainline kernels. But I would actually
advise to be hooked up with ethernet cable when troubleshooting this
kind of things, since the wireless connection is set up by xorg, if
xorg crashes for some reason (but maybe not when it freezes) the
wireless connection will go down as well. Since you need to ssh into
the locked-up system in order to get the logs, you are safer with a
wired connection (although it may work with wireless as well).

One update from the above: At this point in time it is probably better
to use the 2.6.34-rc3 mainline kernel than drm-intel-next, since it
has more bugfixes.
