I can run the laptop with full desktop effects with no problem at all
for days when only the laptop lcd is used and no external monitor is
connected.

Also, sometimes I can enable the external monitor at 1920x1080 both with
and without the laptop lcd enabled at the same time, with full desktop
effetcs enabled. The success rate is higher if power up the laptop with
the external monitor already connected and turned on.
