[Bug 563774] Re: Invalid EDID for Dell SP2309W in VGA mode
Thanks for your advice, Chris. I've been messing around with modelines,
etc, whenever I've found a spare hour. I'm fairly sure the answer lies
with the vertical frequency, but I'm new to this stuff and am on a steep
learning curve.
I've been concentrating on the Dell optimal mode, which is also the
highest resolution. It is quoted everywhere as "2048x1152@60Hz". The
other modes might be wrong too, but this is obviously the best one to
get working first. The specifications are listed on the documentation CD
shipped with the monitor, in /media/cdrom0/en/ug/about.htm. (I don't
want to attach the page in case it carries a copyright).
This is the most important section:
mode: VESA 2048x1152: h-freq=70.99 kHz; v-freq=59.9 Hz; PixelClock=156.75 mHz; SyncPolarity= + horiz / - vert
The lucid Xorg.0.log seems suspicious, because it does not say 60Hz:
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Supported established timings:
(II) NOUVEAU(0): 1280x1024@75Hz
... but this section corresponds quite well:
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Supported detailed timing:
(II) NOUVEAU(0): clock: 156.8 MHz Image Size: 510 x 290 mm
preset display area: 509.95 mm horizontal; 286.84 mm vertical.
pixel clock (see mode above for 2048X1152): 156.75 mHz.
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Using EDID range info for horizontal sync
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Using EDID range info for vertical refresh
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines:
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Modeline "2048x1152"x0.0 156.75 2048 2096 2128 2208 1152 1155 1160 1185 +hsync -vsync (71.0 kHz)
and..
(--) NOUVEAU(0): Virtual size is 2048x1152 (pitch 2048)
(**) NOUVEAU(0): Driver mode "2048x1152": 156.8 MHz (scaled from 0.0 MHz), 71.0 kHz, 59.9 Hz
(II) NOUVEAU(0): Modeline "2048x1152"x59.9 156.75 2048 2096 2128 2208 1152 1155 1160 1185 +hsync -vsync (71.0 kHz)
but "gtf 2048 1152 60" gives me something very different:
# 2048x1152 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 71.52 kHz; pclk: 197.97 MHz
Modeline "2048x1152_60.00" 197.97 2048 2184 2408 2768 1152 1153 1156 1192 -HSync +Vsync
and "gtf 2048 1152 59.9" gives:
# 2048x1152 @ 59.90 Hz (GTF) hsync: 71.40 kHz; pclk: 197.64 MHz
Modeline "2048x1152_59.90" 197.64 2048 2184 2408 2768 1152 1153 1156 1192 -HSync +Vsync
These don't add up, but I don't understand the reason yet. The pixel
clock rates from gtf don't match those Xorg found in the EDID data. I
don't know whether there is a significant difference between 60.0 and
59.9, either. I don't have a test system and dynamically testing new
modelines has often left me with a black screen, so I'll post this now
and then test these new modes offline. Wish me luck!
