I just remembered a fact that may be useful.  In actual fact, compiz did
NOT work correctly when I first upgraded to Lucid beta.  It was subject
to a random problem where the screen acted like it was a TV that had
lost its vertical and/or horzontal hold.   That bug was 541501.

The fix or workaround for this was to edit /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf, changing modeset:
  options radeon modeset=0
