[Bug 406045] Re: [RV360] X Server problem with ATi 9600 XT in Lucid Beta 2

You don't understand. The system doesn't start the graphical server at
all. It just freezes. Not even CTRL+1 or CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work. This
affects me in BETA 2.

I have tested Lucid RC and it seems to work just fine. I mean ...
everything works ... even compiz (wow). I haven't had compiz since 6.06
on this computer. I've also ran the command you mentioned to grab some
debug results. I hope this won't be broken in the final. The RC just
works.

** Description changed:

I have an old computer with an ATi Radeon 9600 XT on it.

If I boot up with the Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS LiveDVD everything works just
  fine.

But if I try to boot with the 8.10 or 9.04 my computer would freeze when
starting the X Server. Actually, the X Server doesn't even start. I see
the boot logo till it loads completely but after that step it is
supposed to get me to the login screen. The problem is that My monitor
goes to standby (maybe it can't find display modes) and I have to reset
  my computer.

I installed 8.04.2 and made an incremental dist-upgrade to Jaunty, but
the same issue is present. I did not install FGLRX because my card is
  not supported any more.

My temporary sollution is to boot into my 9.04 installation using the
8.04 kernel from the GRUB menu.

Maybe someone can help me find a fix for this issue as I could't find on
the internet yet and maybe this fix will get intergrated in 9.10
