This is likely to be the KMS blacklist introduced on those cards in the
2.6.32-21 kernel.  Turning on KMS back on (
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes has details) will
probably fix this for you.

Could you please try that and report whether it works?
