[Bug 571681] Re: Black screen after updating graphics card and reboot

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

+ My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv9574ea with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M graphics
  card.

I have damaged my Vista HDD so decided to try UBUNTU 9.1 from the boot CD.
This only worked in F4 Safe Graphics Mode, but it seemed OK so I installed it on the HDD.
Then I noticed that I could only have the screen in 800x600 so I clicked on the Hardware Drivers icon which recommended that I install the v185 driver. I downloaded it and activated it which needs a reboot.

Now the problem is that it starts to load after the reboot and then
suddenly I see blue boxes all over the screen and it then goes black,
HDD activity stops and I have waited several minutes - nothing.

I rebooted from the CD again as there seemed nothing else I could do and reinstalled UBUNTU.
I repeated the graphics update again, in case I had made a mistake, but no all I got was a black screen again.

  Any suggestions?
