[Bug 494625] Re: -nvidia cannot boot if no xorg.conf

 

Yes, -nvidia requires several settings be specified in xorg.conf in
addition to being installed.  Alternatives also need to be set up
properly so it can use its own GL libraries instead of the standard
X.org libraries.

This is why we provide Jockey in Ubuntu, as it gives a user-friendly way
to take care of all these things.  When you install -nvidia by hand, if
you don't do everything just right you can end up with a broken system.

It would be nice if -nvidia some day could work without needing
xorg.conf settings.  Perhaps they could be patched into xorg-server.
But no one has plans to do this work right now.  We can keep the bug
report open as a wishlist however.
