I suspect that you'll find that setting the option
in /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf will work if you run “sudo
update-initramfs -u” after editing the file.  I've added that to the
wiki.  This is needed if Ubuntu is loading the i915 driver from the
initramfs, before trying to mount the root filesystem.  It will do this,
for example, if you've set up an encrypted filesystem for which you need
to enter the passphrase before it can be mounted.

For the users who are concerned that this bug renders Ubuntu 10.04
unusable on a lot of systems: yes, so are we.  However, there are
similar problems for other 855 users with kernel modesetting turned *on*
- there just doesn't seem to be a set of defaults we could use where all
855 cards would work.
