sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup worked for me
Using:
* kubuntu
* MacBook Pro
* VMWare Fusion 3.0.2
* Swiss German keyboard

Reconfigured keyboard to generic 104 intl keyboard and worked fine to get through login 
command from Keyboard layout - System Settings: setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout ch -variant
