Ok, I might have to retract this as a bug, but I'm not sure how.

For anyone else who has this problem after the upgrade I simply used the
synaptics package manager to remove anything to do with NVidia (and nv).
Restarted and now when I run glxinfo from the terminal I no longer
receive errors and I can have the better appearance settings again.

Perhaps there is still a bug with the upgrade itself for installing the
Nvidia drivers in the first place?
