OK, so it seems that it's not "3d" that's causing the issue.  Two things
then:

1.  the 2D launcher is ultra-slow under the ....5 intel driver.

2.  when I select to start the "Netbook 2d launcher" when I login via
the graphical login screen, it puts up a semi GNOME desktop instead of
just launching the same thing.
