[Bug 525400] Re: Virtual screen causes spontaneous complete system lockups
apport information
** Tags added: apport-collected
** Description changed:
Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati
E.g. when using a flash-based site like
http://www.legallyblondethemusical.co.uk/ my system will eventually
completely lock up. Completely means: No remote ssh, netconsole does not
show anything, Magic sysrq does not work anymore, mouse cursor does not
move, and no keyboard leds are flashing (as they would in case of an
oops). This lockup is also occurring at other times, but not so
reliably.
I tracked it down more or less to the Virtual option in the xorg.conf.
When I had Virtual 3072 1024 commented in in my xorg.conf,
the lockups would appear. When I comment out that line (or use vesa), I am unable to
cause the lockups anymore.
Personally, I'm happy with this solution, although the lack of well-working Dualhead modes is a pity.
However, especially since the lockups are so complete, I'd like to report this bug. If I can help in any way to further
narrow down the cause of this bug, please let me know (e.g. to find out whether it works with a Virtual size not larger than 2048, or adding some other options to the xorg.conf, using debug packages, ...)
