I found this thread on the same problem I'm having.

I did what was said on the thread and removed Xorg and fixed the
problem, but Nvidia needs Xorg.conf for screen resolution and effects so
I ran nvidia-xconfig to get everything back. I tried removing cairo-dock
from start-up and compiz and still same problem. I even changed the
Nvidia driver I was using.
