I installed the xscreensaver package as I only blank my screen after a
certain period and don't need fancy (and wasteful) "eye candy" when I
don't use the machine.

This seems to be one of those bugs where two different functions
"assume" that they system will be in a particular state when it looks
like that in reality it isn't, and the finger must be pointed at both
packages that need some basic code cleaning to fix things.
