Message #72819
[Bug 580899] Re: cant Enable Effects in 10.04. (Can in older ver) Intel chip Pavilion ze4900
I closed the bug with "Invalid" since when running with the vesa driver,
this is expected since that driver has very limited capabilities. So the
problem "cannot enable desktop effects when running with vesa driver" is
not a real bug.
Now, if you remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or change "vesa" to "intel") you
will likely experience some other bugs (see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes#Intel%208xx%20X%20freezes/crashes),
so I will not really recommend that either. These other bugs are not the
same bug that you reported here, and frankly I think we have enough bug
reports of freezes on 855GM. See bug 541511.
So I'm closing this bug report again, which is not to say that you don't
have problems, but simply that the particular bug you reported here
(with the attached logs) is a problem that cannot be solved.
