It's possible - there's been work done on a gallium vdpau (or, rather,
vaapi I think) state tracker.

That said, it's been shelved for a while, we're not going to put any
resources into it, we're unlikely to ship it by default even if it were
feature-complete by Maverick freeze.

If you're interested in helping, contact the Nouveau project.  Their
mailing list is on freedesktop.org
