Forget to mention that I had to enable KMS due to a GPU freeze after
upgrading to karmic, using "options i915 modeset=1".

I have another issue : my cursor is disappearing after closing & re-
opening the lid. Have to change the VT & come back to get the cursor
back.

Seems this three issues are connected, because after switching to linux-
image-2.6.34-020634-generic_2.6.34-020634_i386, it solved all this bugs
at the same time (brightness and cursor).
