OK. I thought this was a KDM problem, but it's also when running GDM.
Had it hppen constantly - even if I restarted the machine - just wouldn't get to that final working desktop before running a loop trying to start the xserver (presumably)

ripped out the ~/.kde folder and was fine... for a while...
