[Bug 566545] Re: No compositing with nvidia-96

This is a fresh install of 32bit Ununtu.
Live CD was showing an immediate blank screen, before even the splash screen.
>From other reports I believe this is due to KMS with Nouveau driver and my card.
Set nomodeset using F6 and then installed.

No changes made to xorg.conf

Card reports as GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X
Driver is NVIDIA Linux x86 Kernel Module 96.43.17 Thu Apr 15 05:28:41 PDT 2010

After installing restricted drivers and restarting, tried for System->Preferences->Appearance,Visual Effects tab
'None' is set.
Attempts to set 'Normal' showed 'Searching for Drivers' at least once.
Showed 'Desktop Effects could not be Enabled' at least once.
Shows as greyed out window for 20-30 seconds and always reverts to 'None'.

So I can't get 3D with Nouveau and can't get it with nvidia driver in
Lucid. nvidia worked in Karmic.

Excerpts from dmesg.log:
