Got the same issue:

# uname -a
Linux kwik 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 08:03:28 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

# uptime
09:15:59 up 2 days, 13:41,  7 users,  load average: 1.85, 2.42, 2.15

# ps aux | grep 1143
root      1143 14.6  6.5 894084 133576 tty7    S<s+ Jul19 540:07 /usr/bin/X :0 -nr -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-2b3xUj/database -nolisten tcp vt7

System seems OK once booted up/GDM started, but system is extremely sluggish & unresponsive when I left it running overnight.
I've removed compositing from GUI, but that only have marginal impact.
