[Bug 614748] [NEW] Screen corruption on gdm startup.

Binary package hint: gdm

I have an ATI Radeon 9000 graphics card. It worked fine (though no 3d
acceleration) until I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. When the computer
starts, I see the circular logo, then the screen fills up with a spread
of low-res text that looks like a character set in rainbow colors.
There is an overly large mouse pointer that isn't corrupt when its on
the screen, but effects the pattern when it goes off the right or
bottom. I do hear the bongos, but I don't know if I am being offered a
login. When I try to switch over to a text console (<ctrl> <alt> 1 or
2), I get a strange pattern like woodgrain, but no text. In order to
login, I have to use the recovery console in fail-safe graphics mode.
The recovery console offers me the opportunity to detect my graphics
settings for the hardware, which it claims to do, and allows me to login
to my desktop in a seemingly uncorrupted way, but when I reboot without
the recovery mode, I am left with the same problem.
