I ran the recovery mode for that kernel and was able to choose the failsafe video option.
Then I chose to reconfigure graphics and setup a new configuration.
Finally restarted X and was into a desktop environment again.

Then I was able to restore the old xorg.conf that was replaced bu the
broken one dependent on nvidia drivers.

nouveau worked for me i the first place so it was just a matter of
getting back to that state.
