None of the above work with nvidia-96. Only this:

$ apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core
xserver-xorg-core:
  Installed: 2:1.8.1.902-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 2:1.8.99.905-1ubuntu1
  Version table:
     2:1.8.99.905-1ubuntu1 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick/main i386 Packages

or using the nouveau with 2:1.8.99.905-1ubuntu1. But of course no compiz
3D etc.
