I just got a bunch of updates, and as far as I can tell one of the
updates seem to fix this issue for me, clicking on the "applications"
icon no longer results in an endless restarting loop.

markus@markus-laptop:~$ apt-cache policy unity

  Installed: 0.2.28-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 0.2.28-0ubuntu3

Also, my .xsession-errors no longer contains dbus timeout messages.
