Thank you noel for the "rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf" tip.  There are a million
websites saying that dpkg-reconfigure console-setup is the trick to fix
this issue, but I had to read through this thread to find the nugget of
information you provided.

My keyboard works again in lucid lynx running on vmware 7.1
