[Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty: pressing enter after 5 minutes crashes X

Okay, I've done some experimenting with my linux command options. If I
have vga=799 on there, I boot to tty7 every time. With or without the
"quite" and/or "splash" options, I see the same results. However, when I
tried vga=771, I end up on tty1 or tty2 again.

So, for whatever reason, this line in my /etc/default/grub file has made this bug disappear for me:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash vga=799"

This makes the splash screen show a more text-like "Ubuntu" instead of
the image logo I saw before, but I could care less what boot looks like
at this point, if there are no more GDM crashes!

Ironically, this seems to suggest that the "vga" option used (again, originally generated when I tried startupmanager) is deprecated:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/startup-manager/+bug/483262

My guess is that this is just a lucky workaround. It seems the most
likely guess (from me, random community member:) is that there's still a
race condition, but this option is somehow disguising it?

I'll try to find some time later to post some logs still, with plymouth
debugging on and such. But I have a tentative workaround, on my laptop,
I think?!?
