[Bug 625239] Re: X starts on wrong tty: pressing enter after 5 minutes crashes X

Okay, I've tested Seth's patch to /etc/init/gdm.conf from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server/+bug/532047/comments/91

I first changed my /etc/default/grub back to basics and ran update-grub
(so, a state that would normally cause this bug to occur after boot). I
did not notice a faster boot--in fact, the splash image itself seems
slightly slower. I watched each of the 5 dots turn red, in succession.
In the past, I think this happened in milliseconds, rather than ~2
seconds. After the splash screen, instead of a very brief flash, I saw
that same old "GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user
id (0)" message on the screen for a full second or so. When I logged in,
X was properly on tty7. So, this does appear to be a successful
workaround for me as well.

It also confirms the precise time in which, under bug conditions, X
would get bounced from tty7 to tty1 or tty2--it's immediately after the
splash for me.
