Yeah in retrospect I can't be to sure I haven't been counting logs from across reboots there; I had been rebooting like hell before it dawned on me that I would need to look at the logfiles to find out whether the 'early X failure due to nvidia not ready' was happening at all, because, well obviously my X desktop kept coming up on vt7 all the time... 

I attach a later run that I _did_ save so you can see how that looked;
this too ended up happily on vt7
