I can confirm that after installing nvidia driver 173.14.27, the problem
with the black screen after switching to a new user and logging off is
gone!

I have had this problem for a long time! I tested it four times in a
row. Prior to installing the new driver, I hit the failure each time
after switching to a new user and logging out.
