possible workaround stemming from comments on the other bug report,
create and upstart job with:

echo "start on started tty1

exec /usr/lib/dkms/dkms_autoinstaller start \`uname -r\`" | sudo tee
/etc/init/dkms_autobuild.userscript.conf
