Good to hear that you are sorted (for now). Could you post the info about 256.53 and GeForce GT 330M in the general Ubuntu Forum? It would be useful for those with similar set-up to yours.

Maverick Meerkat is still (until 10 Oct) a beta so there are likely to
be some issues such as this. As noted elsewhere, it should not be used
for production machines.  As a general rule, no recently released
software should ever be used for production environment. My own rule is
to wait 6 months after the release of a LTS (or equivalent) version
before upgrading any mission critical systems.
