If there's anyone reading this who might have an idea how to solve it:
is there any additional useful information we can provide? It seems
likely that in about a week, there's going to be a lot more users
exposed to this bug, and getting rather frustrated. I don't know how to
begin solving it myself, but I'd be glad to pass information to anyone
who can.
