xrandr was not accepting the parameter :0 as you suggested (it was
returning the help page and creating 0 byte file).  I ran the following
instead:

richard@t41:~$ xrandr --verbose -q > xrandr.16colours.txt
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
richard@t41:~$
