[Bug 538600] [NEW] Various bad Monitor resolutions after installation or monitor change
You have been subscribed to a public bug:
In this case:
Computer : Compaq Presario CQ5101BE.
Video: nVidia GT200 (GeForce G210).
Monitor: 1024×768 capable, no more.
System: Ubuntu 9.10
What I expected to happen : install a system with correct screen
resolution
What happened instead:
Rebooted just after the system was installed.
Monitor running out of sync (6 unreadable striped desktops side by side).
By pure luck, it booted once in a readable way.
So, I was able to reset the session resolution 1152×864 I think -> 1024x768.
I was able to see what I was doing.
But Ubuntu was still starting up unreadably, GDM was used blindly.
A friend mentioned the Nvidia proprietary driver.
I switched to it and there it went booting in a readable 1024x768 way.
In the past, I've had to fix several machines with screens limited to 800×600.
This was adding a cryptic Xorg.conf line to raise the Maximum Horizontal Frequency.
This was the opposite problem.
Obviously, both problems have the same solution.
- the Horizontal Frequency must be high enough and need no tweaking.
- but the default resolution after installation must be 800×600, unless the monitor "tells it"
- so that the user may raise it with System/Preferences/Screen Resolution and accept or deny the result visually.
- for monitor change or other issues, Ubuntu (Grub) must have a fail proof way of booting which, alongside other conservative boot parameters, sets the screen resolution to 800×600 (even if "the monitor tells it" I suppose).
- Screen configuration must clearly distinguish between system startup (GDM) and user login modes.
- User Login mode must have a setting named "default", meaning "the same as system mode".
This is the way at least one other system does it ;-)
Hoping this will help (many screen resolution issues).
** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: Incomplete
