Same, here, Sony Vaio, VPC F13Z1, with NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M, Ubuntu 10.10 64bits
With 256.53 it works.

On clean install,
$ sudo apt-get install dkms
was needed before installing old nvidia drivers.
