Installed the new driver, unpinned x-server, upgraded and all is working
well.

Many thanks NVIDIA team and many thanks to ludwigmace for posting the
ftp link. That README is so very helpful :-)

 Option         "UseEvents" "True"
 Option         "TripleBuffer" "boolean"

in xorg.conf solved a couple of long-standing annoyances.
