  WORK-AROUND:

  I noticed that this error does _not_ occur when using an alternate
  splash theme, i.e.:

  $ sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth

  SELECT--->  1    /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spinner/spinner.plymouth
  70    manual mode
