Re: [Question #76145]: drivers for D946GZAB chipsets with on-board video, lan, sound on a e4500 processors

Question #76145 on Ubuntu changed:

Tom posted a new comment:
Oh ati and intel having been very annoying lately but i'm hoping the
situation might get sorted fairly soon. If you really need a decent
graphics card and have to go with one of them then the newest range of
ati cards, the 4000 series is about the only thing worth going for at
the moment - anything older is flawed or unsupported by ati or both &
apparently separate intel cards are worth avoiding anyway if you have
the option of going ati or nVidia instead ;) Really although they are
often cast as the bad-boys on the block nVidia have somehow wound up
being the only people with even decent proprietary drivers (one of which
they seem to think is OpenSource) our linux devs have created a really
great truly OpenSource driver called something like Noveau or something.
Anyway, looks like my next card might be nVidia for the first time ever.

If you really must get a separate sound card then avoid CreativeLabs as
they seem to be completely against linux, even though desktop linux is
the fastest growing market in IT today and even though just 1 OpenSource
driver would cover all the different linux's - they prefer Windows where
they hav to write about 6 different drivers because "it's easier and
less work" lol, clearly the company is completely clueless about what
they are talking about.

Lan problem really must be just a temporary glitch, usually should be
fine, especially from intel.

Anyway, hopefully all these issues will be fixed before you really want
to upgrade from 8.04. I know it feels weird not jumping onto the latest
release with "everyone else" but the truth is that huge numbers of
people will be sticking with 8.04 until 2010 and see 9.04 as gimickry.
Stick with the solid 8.04 and get some good fun apps and sort fire-
writing out ;) I only just found out that i can watch a movie even
before its fully copied onto my machine - i couldn't do that in Windows
either ;) lol

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
