Did a reboot sort it out?

While rebooting do you get just one option to boot into Ubuntu & 1 for
Windows or do you get several options for booting into Ubuntu?  If you
get several then the 2nd option usually has "recovery mode" near the end
of it's line, choose this one and get to a disturbingly blue but
otherwise harmless menu screen.  Try the option "fix x-server" and that
resets all your desktop effects and graphics setup back to defaults (or
sometimes slightly better considered defaults ;)
