I'm not sure if taking the side off would cause problems like that.  I
can't imagine not taking the side off but that might indeed be a
problem!

Can i just check how far we have ot here?  We've used a LiveCd session to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot and got multimedia working by going through

and everything is pretty much working.  Have you been able to reboot into Windows and Ubuntu?
