Re: [Question #76245]: 9.04 Jaunty blackscreen on laptop?

Question #76245 on Ubuntu changed:

brookshire is still having a problem:

Thanks for all the info. I'm sure it will be very useful if I can get the box running again. Right now, it's still just a black screen no matter what I do. Last night, I tried the Ubuntu 8.10 disk, then I tried a Vista Ultimate disk, and finally I tried the system Vista recovery disks that came with the box. Nothing ever came up on the screen, no matter what was placed in the drive. You could hear the disk(s) spinning, but eventually they all stopped.

I called HP, the OEM, and their tech support told me they could not give
me the names of compatible video cards for my box. It doesn't make
sense to send it back to the OEM for repair because the cost is
exorbitant. I could try some local repair people, but I do not see the
point when I know the problem is the video card and/or the video
software. My theory is that I can just plug in a new compatible video
card from a different manufacturer and everything will be rosy. Do you
know if there is a site that I can go to that can tell me about other
cards that could replace my current card?

It's probably taken years to get used to Windows but you'll probably find that linux takes just a few weeks or maybe a month or so before you feel comfortable with it. Most of the big and most technical problems are at the start, things soon tend to settle down a lot. I thought you might like a couple of guides to help your transition

Note they both have search tools, i prefer the button one in synaptic because it searches descriptions as well as titles so i can be a lot more vague about what type of program i'm looking for ;)
