[Question #76427]: After kernel upgrade ALSA sound is broken

New question #76427 on Ubuntu:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/76427

I just updated my Ubuntu 9.04 PC to 2.6.28-13-generic

When I rebooted ALSA sound no longer worked. The startup sound was no longer played correctly. When I do the sound-test via the "Sound Preferences" dialog I hear a heavily distorted series of clicks instead of the pure sine-wave that I hear when I test via OSS.

Other applications (e.g. VLC) work fine if I set the audio-output mode to VLC. If I use the default ALSA mode I either get the clicky effect or nothing at all.

The sound-card is reported as "HDA ATI SB VT178S Analog (Alsa)"
