Well we cannot gather any info about this since you've reinstalled two
times since.
I would recommend to stick with 8.04 until 9.10 is released in October
and then upgrade or reinstall. I too would be curious to know what
update caused this, but my suspicion is on a kernel update. But that
information is lost to us now. The good thing about this is that your
using an LTS version and when 9.10 Karmic is released you'll be on a
easy upgrade to 9.10. Of course nobody ever recommends 'upgrading' over
reinstalling.
If you don't want to wait, then try installing 9.04 fresh. If you get a
black screen, try Ctrl-alt-F2 to get a terminal and see if that works.
Also you can check to see if the livecd will boot properly or if the
black screen reappears.
