Try the following:

1) Open a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal)
2) Type the following command very carefully (or copy and paste) and then press <Enter>:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

3) You will be prompted for your password.  Your password will not
appear on screen when you are typing, so type carefully.

4) Try whatever task was not working before again.  Copy an error
messages you get at any point in these directions back here.
