Re: [Question #76640]: Download Free Java for Linux Version 6 Update 14 for Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop
Question #76640 on Ubuntu changed:

Status: Open => Answered
Derek White proposed the following answer:
Ubuntu does not come with java installed by default, due to licensing I
believe.
If you install/have installed the package sun-java-jre, then you have
version 6 update 13. It is doubtful this will be updated prior to Karmic
being released.
If you install/have installed openjdk-6-jre, then it seems as though
this is compatible with update 14.
If the openjdk-6-jre package does not make you "compatible", then visit
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp & click on the Free Java
Download button. Select the second download, Linux (self-extracting
file), and while it downloads check out the instructions. Prior to
installing, you might want to remove any previously installed java
packages and perform a 'sudo apt-get autoremove' from the terminal.
