Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories →
Terminal and type:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Please give your user password when requested.

Delete all contents of the file and copy and paste ALL the rows below:

## a “general” sources.list for Hardy Heron; all sources are
uncommented.

# See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to
# newer versions of the distribution.

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted

Then please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories →
Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get autoremove

Please give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing
when you type it, then press enter.
