try this command, see if it quick fixes thing
sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart
if not, try rebooting then when the system settles to the desktop in a
terminal run:
dmesg | less
and read though the system bootup, see what happens as the system boots.
You use the cursors to scroll up and down.
You could also set your bios to failsafe defaults to ensure its
detection.
The dmesg should be checked first though, PS/2 mice are hugely
supported.
